With the economy in a slip, and the stimulus package finally being set into motion, many people are searching for little ways to save money so that they do not have to feel the heavy hit of the economic down turn. Luckily though, there are several little ways to save money that will help people out with budgeting and saving money.

Save money on beauty and self-care by doing haircuts at home instead of at the salon. A good set of clippers and hair cutting scissors will run about $20, but will pay for itself in no time. If you’re into color and highlights, purchase the color yourself at a beauty store or local discount chain store. If you can do it yourself, you’ll be able to save a lot of money by not having to pay $65 to $100 for the treatment. If you can’t, see if you can find a friend who will do it for you, in exchange for you doing it for them. Do your own manicures and pedicures, too. Purchasing the supplies you need will cost you money, but the savings will definitely be worth it over paying someone else to do it for you.

Instead of going to the movies, rent a movie. Instead of renting from your local movie rental store, use an Internet service such as NetFlix. A monthly membership here for one movie out at a time unlimited rentals per month is cheaper than going to the store and renting two movies for a night or two. Factor in the gas you’ll save, and it’s definitely one of the great little ways to save money. Netflix now offers services through the PlayStation 3, xBox 360 and Wii (coming Spring 2010) that will allow you to stream movies and televisions shows instantly to your TV. This really makes the monthly membership last, at $9 a month for unlimited movies instantly and in the mail!

Save money on gas by refusing to buy into the products that help increase gas efficiency. These products have not been shown to make enough difference to make the purchase worth it. Instead, be sure you are driving within the speed limit, shutting the car off instead of idling for extended periods or time, and take other measures to ensure you’re not spending as much on gas, even though you are still driving the same amount.

Other little ways to save money include making your own coffee instead of going to Starbucks every morning, using once a month cooking to always have meals on hand and fight the urge to go out to eat as often, and entertain friends and family at home instead of going out on the weekends.
